El Borracho Re-Opens With Entirely Plant-Based Menu

El Borracho Re-Opens With Entirely Plant-Based Menu

Another Seattle restaurant is making the modern switch and going 100% plant-based. This time, it’s El Borracho, a popular Mexican food restaurant with locations in Ballard, Pike Market, and Tacoma.

Owner Kittie Davidovich has been vegan for over 30 years, which explains why their previous menu had plenty of vegan options, including vegan nachos, tacos, and burritos. But now, she tells local news outlet My Ballard, “It’s always been at the forefront of my mind to be plant-based, but I wasn’t sure if we could make it. But I’ve seen a shift in Seattle.”

And she’s absolutely right.

Seattle’s Growing Demand For Plant-Based Food

Over the last year, multiple Seattle restaurants including Georgetown Liquor Co. have switched to entirely plant-based menus, and the response has been positive.

The overall number of fully plant-based establishments in the city is still quite small, and they’re scattered; so restaurants like El Borracho have a major advantage, for now, with low competition and high demand.

There are a solid handful of vegan-friendly Mexican restaurants in Seattle, so going all-in will ultimately set El Borracho apart from the rest.

Details On El Borracho’s New Menu

So, what’s on the menu? Tacos, burritos, burrito bowls, nachos, and plenty of sides including rice, beans, queso, and guac. And for the main proteins, get ready for way more choices than you’re used to.

Tajin Shrymp, Impossible Tex-Mex Beef Crumbles, Smoky Chorizo and Potato, Chikin Tinga, Seitan Barbacoa (made by Portland’s Snacrilege), Tofu and Pineapple Al Pastor, Chipotle Potato with Queso and Crispy Jalapeno, and Jackfruit Cochinitas Pibil.

For non-alcoholic beverages, choose from Horchata, Tamarind or Jamaica Agua Fresca, Pink Lemon-Limeaid, or a Virgin Caesar. And for those wanting an adult bevvy, they’ve got plenty - including a variety of Margaritas, a dirty Horchata, or a refreshing Rooibos Reposado Tea Cooler.

El Borracho Downtown Now Open, Tacoma and Ballard To Open Late Summer

El Boracho’s Pike Market location on 1st Ave is now open for dine-in and take-out, and Davidovich says that Ballard and Tacoma locations will open later in the summer as staffing and other issues are sorted out. Keep an eye on our Facebook and Instagram (@darbythevegan) for the latest updates.
