THE SUSHI SAMURAI

Queen Anne

Fully vegan

You’d think that a popular sushi spot with 12 years in business would be weary of making a complete vegan transition overnight.. but that’s exactly what the team behind The Sushi Samurai did. In June 2022, they became Seattle’s first-ever fully vegan sushi restaurant, and they’re off to a great (re)start.

“We felt called to do this for a very long time,” says owner Ray Maranon. “We’ve always been intentional about sourcing as sustainably as possible,” he said, but overtime they kept being pulled to make the switch to a fully plant-based menu for the many environmental and ethical reasons.

When I asked if he’s worried about upsetting his current customer base, he replied, “Not really.. some might come around and try what we have to offer, because it’s still delicious. The rest have plenty other great sushi restaurants in town that offer what they want.”

We talked about how plant-based sushi isn’t just for vegans, but for those who are pregnant; those wanting to get more plants into their diet in a fun and delicious way; those with shellfish allergies; and general food enthusiasts excited to try something new.

The Sushi Samurai menu features vegan salmon and shrymp, which are phenomenally close to the real thing but made out of plants. They also make spicy “tuna” in house out of marinated tomato. The plating is gorgeous, with fruit, flowers, and celery stalks cut into curly ribbons. For those concerned about protein intake, Ray’s wife took the time to calculate the approximate protein for each sushi roll and dish on their menu.

They do take reservations, which are highly recommended as the space is very small. They also have a structured outdoor patio with a roof and windows for extra seating. Visit The Sushi Samurai

KAMAKURA

Fremont

Kamakura is new to the sushi scene in Seattle, having just opened in February of 2021. But it is by far the most accommodating for vegan sushi in Seattle outside of The Sushi Samurai. Why? Because they have an entire vegan menu to choose from! It also gives us yet another reason (as if we needed any more) to enjoy one of Seattle’s raddest neighborhoods, Fremont.

Get your classic rolls like vegan tuna maki and a vegan California roll. Or, go wild with Kamakura’s specialty vegan rolls!

Kamakura’s owner recommends the Tofu Roll and the Death By Crunch Roll. Yelpers also recommend the Welcome To Vegan roll, which is crafted with vegan crab and tuna, grilled onions, cucumber, and avocado, topped with crunch, and served with three different sauces.

Word on the street is that the owners are looking for a new space to open up a fully vegan sushi restaurant in Seattle in 2022… so cross your fingers!

Don’t miss their flagship location in Lacey (near Olympia) when you’re traveling South. Visit Kamakura in Fremont

Irashai

West Seattle

Irashai opened in 2019 and have since added a full vegan menu to the mix! The menu features tofu crab meat and tomato “spicy tuna,” and 8 vegan signature rolls to choose from. Plus, enjoy entrees like yakisoba and udon noodles, and plenty of apps like miso and edamame.
