Communion Seattle Serves Soul Food, Craft Cocktails, And Comfort For All Eaters

Looking to support a well-deserving small business and eat some phenomenal food? Head on over to Communion - Seattle’s new, Black-owned and vegan-friendly soul food restaurant - and indulge in some amazing flavors.

Communion Seattle serves as a gathering place for eaters of all preferences to come together, spearheaded by Chef Kristi Brown and her son, business partner, and Senior Mixologist, Damon Bomar.

The cuisine pays homage to American Soul Food traditions and flavors mixed with Chef Kristi’s experiences living in the Pacific Northwest.

Her mantra is “Everybody gotta eat!” which means there is something for everyone at the table.

The restaurant also boasts an incredible bar program, with Bomar’s Brown Liquor Company crafting fresh-squeezed juices and signature craft cocktails.

Communion's Deep Roots In Serving Seattle's Community

Since opening its doors to the Central District in mid-December of 2020, Chef Kristi and her team have seen an immense outpouring of support and well-satisfied customers who are eager to come back for more.

But long before the opening, many were already big fans of Chef Kristi Brown from her local catering company, That Brown Girl Cooks!, which specializes in traditional Soul food blended with flavors from around the globe.

To say she developed a cult-like following is a bit of an understatement if you've had her food before.

Once the Covid-19 pandemic hit, Chef Kristi and Bomar's mission was clear: to serve the needs of the community.

Bomar's Brown Liquor Company sold cocktails to-go (accompanied by a plate of tacos from Chef Kristi's kitchen) during the early months of the pandemic, giving folks comfort and a great meal in an uncertain time.

Pivoting toward the most vulnerable during the pandemic, Chef Kristi and her catering service created Community Kitchen, a walk-up ordering window that serves free meals every Thursday and Saturday in the Mount Baker neighborhood.

This passion translates into their cuisine as well. Dining at Communion feels like you're receiving a warm hug. It feels like a reconnection to the community we've all lost touch with since the pandemic began, and for some, even long before.

A Vegan

Perspective

of Communion

After hearing such great things, I had to check out Communion for myself. And let me tell you, they did not disappoint. My meal started with the grilled okra - something I’ve never tried before.

Not only was my mouth immediately bursting with flavor, but I got a sense of nostalgia; recreating the feeling I would get being surrounded by my family during our summer barbeques as a kid. I literally could not put them down; they were hands-down my favorite part of the meal.

Next on the menu was the famous corn chowder, and trust me, if you eat here, you won’t want to skip this. The flavor was incredible, the spice levels were on point, and the texture was perfect (something that vegans know can sometimes be hard to achieve).

I rounded up my meal with the Oyster-Mushroom Po’Mi, a fusion of a traditional Po’Boy and Bahn Mi (a simple adjustment takes this item from vegetarian to vegan). The mushrooms on this sandwich were cooked to perfection and seasoned beautifully. The texture and crunch were so crisp that even fellow meat lovers couldn’t find fault with it. I was left feeling absolutely stuffed, which is how you know the food was great.

A Place To

Wow

The

Whole Family

Communion is that ideal spot for vegans and meat-eaters to eat together where everyone can enjoy.

Far too often, going out when you're vegan means you're left to eat french fries or a side salad while your non-vegan friends are indulging in something delicious.

But that won’t happen here.

This is also a place for your non-vegan friends to try new and creative ways of experiencing veggies, and realizing just how amazing vegan food can be!

Make sure they try the corn chowder... But make sure they don't eat all of yours.

The inclusive menu and friendly staff will make sure you're taken care of, and you’ll leave with a belly full of food and a heart filled with gratitude.
