The Best Vegan Multivitamins For 2024

Not all vitamins are created equal… and most are not vegan-friendly.

Ready to find a quality vegan multivitamin? I’ve got you. But first, in case you’d like to learn a bit about why multivitamins aren’t always vegan:

What Makes Vitamins Not Vegan?

Simply put: Vitamins are derived from many different sources, and often the cheapest and easiest to get is from animal products.

When creating a multivitamin, manufacturers source each individual vitamin supplement from various producers, and these producers have different methods to extract (or synthetically create) these essential vitamins. Because the multivitamin label doesn’t always say how each ingredient was produced, you won’t know for sure how each vitamin was derived. Here are a few to look out for:

  • Omega-3: A perhaps obvious ingredient that is not typically vegan is Omega-3, usually labeled as “fish oil” on the front of the bottle or under the ingredients. But it’s actually possible to get this essential vitamin from plants! Omega-3 DHA can be sourced from microalgae- the same place the fish gets its omega 3’s!

  • Vitamin D: A less-obvious one, however, is Vitamin D- usually derived from lanolin, a moisturizing wax extracted from sheep’s wool. But Vitamin D can also be obtained animal-free from lichen.

  • Gelatin: While not a vitamin in and of itself, gelatin is a common ingredient for coating tablets as well as gummy vitamins (and most gummy candies). Its made by boiling animal bones and hooves which creates a gelatinous layer that is then used for all kinds of things. But a gelatin alternative can easily be made from plant-based sources like cornstarch and agar agar (an algae-based product).

Now that you have an idea of what to look out for, let’s talk about how to choose a quality vegan vitamin.

How Do I Choose The Right Vegan Multivitamin?

It can be difficult to find a vegan multivitamin that is affordable, checks all the boxes for the essentials you’re looking for, and one that goes down easy. Here are a few quick tips:

  1. Check the label. First and foremost, make sure the multivitamin is labeled as vegan, or else you might be dealing with animal-derived ingredients.

  2. Avoid filler ingredients! Another tip is to not be fooled by marketing tactics and labels. Make sure you are getting the blend of vitamins you want, and in the right dosages, and that the vitamin doesn’t have a lot of filler ingredients. Added sugar, starch, sweeteners, gluten, wheat, soy, and artificial flavors, colors and preservatives are just some filler ingredients that really aren’t necessary, and you shouldn’t waste your money on them. A clean and potent vegan multivitamin is best.

  3. Figure out what YOU need. Ask yourself - am I eating the rainbow pretty regularly? Do I get enough sunlight each day? If you aren’t sure, a blood test from your doctor will reveal what vitamins your body might be low on, so you can supplement accordingly.

  4. Do your research! I highly recommend you do your own research so that you invest in a top-quality vitamin and support a brand that is doing right by vegans and our overall health.

I researched dozens of different brands, read hundreds of customer reviews, and checked out what top plant-based doctors and health experts recommend to give you a handful of the top products on the market.

Below are the brands I found most reputable, with products that hit all the marks. Each one has a different vitamin makeup, so be sure to check the ingredients I listed to make sure it has what you need.

I hope this helps save you time and helps you choose your new favorite vegan multivitamin!

My Top Picks For Vegan Multivitamins In 2023

Terraseed is a top-rated, Nexty award-winning, clean and transparent vegan multivitamin. It’s also the first vegan multivitamin made with 100% biodegradable packaging! So not only is this brand looking out for us vegans and animals, they’re doing right by the planet, too.

“The supplement industry creates 1.8 billion plastic bottles every year - 70% of which end up in the ocean, in landfills, or other environmentally-hazardous locations,” says Terraseed. This is something that needs to change to support a healthy planet, and Terraseed is leading the charge.

Terraseed’s multivitamins come in a small compostable pack along with a reusable (and biodegradable!) tube you can keep on using. Simply dump your vitamins into the reusable tube, and once you’re low on vitamins, your refills will arrive in (you guessed it) a compostable pack!

Terraseed is super transparent with their ingredients and sourcing, with a user-friendly ingredients list that lets you read the daily recommended dosages, and what each vitamin is optimal for.

If you’re new to taking an Omega-3 supplement, you might notice a bit of an aftertaste. Some people do, some people don’t! Just have peace of mind knowing it’s not coming from fish, but beautiful and good-for-you microalgae, and take your vitamins with food to prevent this. Omega-3’s are so beneficial for your health!

You think vegan celeb Alicia Silverstone would help create a sub-par vegan multivitamin? As if! Together with Garden Of Life, she helped design a multivitamin that was USDA Organic, certified vegan, and fully loaded with all the essentials your body needs for optimal health.

If you are just staring your vegan journey, or you’re more of a junk food vegan than a whole food plant based one, this vitamin will help fill in the gaps for better health. Inside each tablet is B vitamins for radiant skin and nails, vitamin B-12 in methylcobalamin form—a highly absorbable, active, natural form of B-12, like the B-12 in the body. Once Daily also delivers vegan D3 from lichen for immune support and 2mg of iron for blood support. Plus, many more vitamins you might not be getting from your diet.

The capsule is on the larger side, so if you don’t like swallowing pills, opt for their gummy version and take 4 a day to get the same doses as the tablet.

Ingredients: Vitamins A, C, D, E, K; Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, B12; Iron, Zinc, Selenium, Manganese, Chromium, Folate.

Dose: 1 tablet per day, or 4 gummies per day.
